Introduction

ANZAC Day - April 25th Peter Anderson.

Hello, my name is Peter Anderson. I live in Melbourne Australia.

Melbourne, the capital of the Great Southern Land. At least I think so. A beautiful city, and getting more so. A land of diversity, with all manner of culture and religion getting together. A choice of cuisine, of menu, of entertainment, and of venue. Far enough from the sometimes madness of Sydney, more functional and lifestyle 'rich' than Canberra, Melbourne is a great mix of 'business' {link} and 'lifestyle' choice.

As the capital of Victoria, Melbourne is the gateway to a selection of 'stunning' and diverse country areas, all within an afternoons drive.

I have added a layered external style sheet to my current home page. This is on trial for now. I have disabled the [Style Manager] for the time being. The 'over'laid style sheet may be the cause; under-investigation.

June 6th.

Using a number of techniques, starting with finding a page I like, I often create a page layout based on one I have found, this is the latest example. [Blog Review] I am thinking of at last documenting those useful sites I have found, in one place, rather than always losing them, sometimes for months at a time. Recent Find: Newblog.

Google Search for: FREE blog?

This link will display a list of sites that offer a FREE Blog. * blogger.com is a Google product and as you might expect is very good.

I write about 'stuff'... .. nothing in particular, just whatever I stumble across and takes up some brain space... 'I' find it of interest, you never know, others might as well.

Future of Coffee Tables

Microsoft Surface: What could be mistaken as a late April's Fool Day gag, this is a Microsoft Powered table with intelligence. A glass top table, with an integrated large PC screen that offers 'finger' touch control, allowing the dragging and rotating of photo's, the scanning of 'bar codes', re-charging of a mobile phone.. etc.

Surface. Detailed information on what the future holds. I want one!

Imagine the future: your table can locate your various remote controls and point to them, or, perhaps the table turns into a Super Size Remote control and includes video previews, or Music collections, there is a button on the glass top screen that is wirelessly connected to the Coffee Machine, all it takes to start it up is a finger press.

Permanent Power

I sometimes lose Household Power, as I am almost always on-line and connected to the Internet, there is never a good time for the power to just drop out. I expect that these days, if it is really important, you can afford it, see a need, and can be bothered; that it is possible to never lose power again.

Never Lose Power Again!

All I need now is: a sensor that monitors the current availability of the 'Commercial Feed'. The ability for a Power Generator to sense any interruption, to start generating power, and to supply adequate power from on-line batteries in the interim. The next step beyond UPS Protection.

re: FREE web hosting

Have you ever wanted a WEB Page but not done it due to the cost?

Some time ago, I found that the expense of a professional host was just too much to fit into the budget. Whilst there are cheap options available, living on a pension (disability benefits), and ensuring that all the bills are paid meant that something had to give. Since that time, I have been searching for, testing and evaluating some of the free hosts that are available. 'MS WEB PEOPLE' is still on hold and may re-surface one day, but I doubt it (due to the cost).

I have found several, all are FREE of any cost, all come with a range of useful features and that do not include advertising of any kind. The following list is a selection of what I have on trial.

My other sites,

I spend time on lots of other web sites, below is a list of the latest finds. These are all FREE of cost and therefore fit into the 'budget'.

  • mynew.ws : Supplied by www.pandela.com
  • duke of url : Supplied by www.netfast.com
  • atspace : Supplied by: atspace.com
  • These sites are currently all acting as a copy of my home page and some are trialing different techniques.

If you are looking for a reliable host that offers, FTP, No Ads, SQL, etc... these are worth a look.

Now that I have three sites behaving like I hoped they would, and they all seem to be reliable, I am thinking of having different content on each site rather than estensibly the same, I just have to decide on what it will be.

May 26th.

This page is a simplified version without a Top Banner Graphic. It is hosted on the 'latest find' - a free, ad free WEB Host. Whilst it has limits on the features, and may not be suitable for a high-end user, it is enough for a personal page. It is provided by 'pandela.com'. Look for the FREE option on the page.

May 23rd. I have had a low period. My vision is getting really bad and my touch typing is lousy as my fingers just don't seem to find the right keys. I am close to giving up on the web. At least to be not as active. I currently spend most of the day on and off the web and modifying my pages.

I have drafted an email to my cyber buddies and have sent it only to myself. I am considering sending it out, but haven't decided either way just yet.

SNAPSHOTS. One of the most innovative tools I have stumbled across.

Snap Shots

An open platform that intelligently brings the right content to the right person, at the right place, at the right time, and formatted in a way that makes it most useful and understandable; a radical departure from the traditional Internet model of forcing users to browse website after website, manually trying to find what they're looking for. For content owners, Snap Shots provides distribution across millions of websites large and small. For website publishers, it provides a dramatically enhanced user experience as easily as creating a link, with full customization options. And for end users, it provides quality, relevant, easily-accessible information that's organically part of their favorite websites.

Snap Shots is also highly customizable using the Snap Shots Markup Language, which allows sites to personalize existing Shots or to trigger them from specific words using <span> or <div> tags.

Coffee Reviews (Melbourne)

Latte Art Coffee Addiction? If you are like me, you are close to having a coffee addiction. My first drink each morning is usually coffee. As I am a home body, and do not have a 'coffee machine' of any sort, it is usually instant or 'Turkish'. As a coffee lover, I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled on this site.

Coffee Tip: For those readers that drink Australian Instant Coffee. If you have milk in your coffee, and you add the milk last; make sure you try it by ensuring the boiling water is added after the milk. It is a different drink with a different taste.

GUS: the Great Un-Sorted Sections

The following sections are in no logical order yet, they probably make no sense whatsover. It just comes out.

When I think about it, this web site is really a memory and recollection dumping ground, and then using the output as filler for a perpetual personal challenge which includes learning HTML and CSS.

Escape at Midnight.

The getaway vehicle. I have worked all my life in the 'people' business... or at least that is how I think of the 'sales' profession.

First, in retail shoes, at 15 years old, some years working in Geelong then saw my first 'escape' (from a smaller town), to Melbourne. Through store management and store moves... then from 'retail shoes' to 'new cars', finance, insurance add-ons etc, then after 'escaping' (Motor Vehicle Industry), onto Technology (computers and software). Then, into niche areas such as LAN's, WAN's, IPSEC, Security, E-Business, E-Commerce in a real office, global roll-outs, International Projects, Software Development ...

I enjoyed my time in all industries (retail, new vehicle dealership, I.T. Sales and Consulting...), and loved meeting the people! What memories!

It is common for people, once a part of these industries, to remain for all of their working life. I am fortunate to spend as long as I did, in both 'new cars' and 'I.T.' (Information Technology). Then to make my escape!

My time in the 'second job' arena.

In diverse fields such as: bar-tender (Geelong Football Social Club), (old school) Restaurant Drink Waiter (wines and cocktails of the day), assistant Roadie (for Cloud Nine - a Melbourne 'pub' band), Karate Instructor, Melbourne City & Suburban Hotel Bouncer.. amongst others ... kept me meeting the most amazing people.

Whether it be in retail or corporate sales, or at an over-crowded Night Club full of drunks, it is ALL a 'people business' in my eyes.

A list of memorable characters may include: 'all sorts' - (If I decide to)

Movin' and Groovin'.

none Corporate Ladder. Look out from above!

I almost lived two lives. One, as a husband and father of three, school council (Primary & Secondary). Charter member, President, Bulletin Editor, Board Member, Zone Chairmen, ..., of Altona Meadows Lions Club.

The mark I left..... .....

ALTERNATE Role
An office ON the beach!
Office by the beach.

Humidifier Options

Montechristo. Dunhill cigars - Always nice. Phillipe Patek Watch. Mont-Blanc have a cool watch too. Bling... Then another ("life") as a member of the 'yuppie' squad, wannabe stand-by team. A wannabe entrepeneur. With near success via my own initiative, on numerous ocassions, I left industry a wiser man.

Involvement (of varying degrees) in: the creation of, the start-up of, or, the operation and management of businesses that spanned: Seafood Export, Software Distribution, Software Development, ... • Austate Financial Group ("AFG") (Essendon) • 'Melbourne Corporate Centre' • Aussie Seafoods • Barlenson Consulting • Power Pack Group • DataEase Australia (pty. ltd.) •

Some highlights.

...

New Window with: images/spectrum.gifI.T. Saw me cross a range of technologies. The first really cool I.T. toy I played with, a Sinclair Spectrum {Link 1}, saw me hooked, and probably got me started.

I have been fortunate enough to be able to live in a number of areas, and to assume different roles each with different goals and values [CREDIT]. Shane Hodge Author: 'RGV' - "Roles, Goals & Values."

I have lived in the inner and outer suburbs, in Geelong and in numerous Melbourne suburbs, north, south, east & west, in small houses, large houses, new and old, in the country (on 300 acres at Lancefield), Interstate (Queensland Gold Coast, Salisbury - Adelaide), and on a plane or an airport lounge and at various interstate Hotels and Motels when on 'project', & out of a suitcase.

Using this as a baseline, Melbourne is a great place to live.

Hardware, Software, Underware.

I used to often say, "Hardware, Software, Underware" - It all can be expensive at the end of the day, if it doesn't fit correctly!

Underware, Underwear?

Social connections saw many memories added to the bank. Only some are for General Consumption, some are not covered here. I have had the fortune, or mis-fortune to see both categories up close (Underware and Underwear).

Underwear: Knickers, Panties, G-String.
Underware: Information Technology related. Something low down the ISO Model. hardware, software, middleware, underware...

On the assumption anything above the line is something other than underware, I have worked with Hardware as the focus of speciality, and software from a distribution and, or solution development focus at different times.

I worked in I.T. during the days and travelled regularly for a few years. I was a wannabe, worked hard and enjoyed the journey. In many respects, things were good. Job at Netscape HQ Melbourne at Launch, when they were cool. Company car (leased), Expense Account, Entertainment Allowance (Meals, Shows, Events,,), Company 'standard and regular driver', Five Star Tastes and Budget. ....

Underwear: 'Circumstances' saw me as the appointed 'panty catcher' at several "shows". — of the strip variety.

Today's Ramble/Stumble/Sidetrack/Mumble

Melbourne Weather. The world's weather all in one day!

* The above picture is a result of boredom. This page is becoming a platform for experimentation and personal challenge. It is turning into my personal journal, or at least a combination of a journal and a place to hand code pages and to try various techniques.

I use the web almost every day, sometimes too much. I find all sorts of great web sites and usually trial sites that offer free BLOGS, or other tools of interest. More often than not, unless I adopt them for daily use, I will forget or lose them for weeks or months at a time.

Sometimes, in between first registration and trial use and the next time I find them and look again, there has been an upgrade to the features. This link is an example. Blog at BLOGNOW.com.au

This site comprises a part of an on-going test of CSS and creating a page layout from "scratch". It will probably change often, as I spend a part of each day/night/{block of time} doing something on the site.

← My most recent tinkerings are at top left.

I am slowly taking the "best of" out of the archives and presenting it here... somewhere. My Story, or a part of it, is available here, or via some of the links.

Recent Additions

The more I use this site, the more I am leaning towards making this a more permanent starting page. I will probably add some links of interest to the "left hand side panel", then after a few days they will move to the "Other" category for the longer term.

PREFACE

Old habits.

.. I have a long standing habit of coming up with some crazy idea, of some sort, based on something esoteric. then using whatever it is on a WEB page. Inevitably. I come up with something in the form of an un-finished, incomplete page and then overwrite my current page in an over-lapping fashion. It’s just what I do.

I have been turning to the WEB to take my mind of M.S. induced frustrations. I have been searching for FREE Hosting as a result of a limited budget. This page is hosted by http://ifastnet.com/, which is the latest find. I am so impressed, I have added a banner ad by choice (at the bottom of the page).

I search the Internet almost every day, I am not sure; still, after some 20 years, what it is I am looking for. Perhaps I will never know.

Better ways...

I use the WEB to 'vent' in my own way, and to outline my story. Predominately for me, I re-count memories and life experiences so I can look back on them.

All good books have chapters..

Life is like a book, a record of events and memories... Something tells me that a new Chapter is dawning.

Almost 20 years ago, a work-mate who I had only recently met, did my Astrological chart. I had never had this done before, but something deep inside told me I should do it. It didn't cost anything, and I even was offered real hospitality and a coffee. It took several weeks to complete and I had it interpreted at his home.

He began by telling me what Star Sign I was, and what various 'aspects' were present, and what they meant. At the time, I was the 'new kid'/most recent hire and as such, nobody knew much about me, my history, or my life.

He explained what he found, and what it meant. As he didn't really know or see more than my 'work persona', he was confused and asked a number of very specific questions that related to things he saw in the chart. e.g. Cancer with with Sun Square Mars (amongst some specific family related areas). Some of which were NOT Public knowledge.

Two specific areas that were indicated and dominant were asked about. The first was Sun Square Mars, and the result from what a number of others indicators lead to. Sun Square Mars, is a violent, aggressive aspect that is worth reading about. The others, indicated quite another side.

The entire reading took several hours and the summary and explanation was recorded on Audio Cassette (remember those?). Never being one to regularly read 'my stars', I can tell you that the specific details mentioned without any prompting, really 'blew me away'. I was left with the impression that they were way more than guesses, or 'funnelled answers'

I was determined to NOT offer any possible reasons, and whilst it took some time, it was finally uncovered.

The two, that were mysterious aspects (not to me), were satisfied with more details on my past. I had been a Hotel Bouncer and a Martial Arts instructor and an active participant and advocate. This seemed to satisfy the Sun Square Mars aspect. I had also been an active teenage competitive Ballroom Dancer and Junior Australian D.M.A. champion during the mid seventies. This seemed to cater for the other side of the coin.

[ Mid-Life

Whilst some would say it is inevitable that life changes at around 'mid-life', an event, or status was uncovered and never really fully explained. In order to NOT 'freak me out', remember we were newly acquainted, all he said was that there was something 'significant' ahead of me. Could it have been my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, which didn't happen for some ten years? The adoption of a wheelchair as a part of my daily routine, my complete change of life plan?

He indicated that I would live a ripe old age, so long as I abide by some rules. One was 'nothing to excess - and everything in moderation'. 'nothing more specific than that...'

a Skeleton Key

Major Percy Black.
Major Percy Black. more details.

I believe, that we all have the odd skeleton in the closet. Something about our 'family' that is NOT for every audience.

He told me of something that made absolutely no sense, and that rang no bells. It wasn't for another almost 20 years that I understood. I found out that whilst my mother had always said "...you know you have a war hero in your family...!", I had always assumed that anyone who went to war was a hero. At one of the Anzac Day gatherings (mid nineties) at Bullecourt (France), my great uncle was the topic of the Federal Ministers speech.

What I was unaware of was: Major Percy Black (16th Battalion), DSO, DCM, Creux de Guerre avec Palm, was one of the highly decorated, during World War I. He is recognised as the first to get his men across the Hindenberg Line.

On the night of 11 April 1917 the Australians attacked the Germans in Bullecourt. The ANZACs had no artillery, and the tanks that were supposed to break through the wire broke down or bogged in the snow-covered ground. Major Percy Black, who was leading part of the attack, called to his men: "Come on boys, bugger the tanks!" and charged towards the wire. His men leapt through with him, and fought their way into the German trenches. They were the first soldiers to break through the Hindenburg line. Proudly they looked for Major Black. But he lay dead on the wire.

Top 25 Rock Songs With a Secret

  1. "Louie Louie" — The Kingsmen: Though the song was originally written by Richard Berry, the Kingsmen's version was a huge hit and inspired an equally huge controversy when rumors spread the virtually inaudible lyrics were super dirty. The FBI even investigated the potentially un-American nastiness of the song's message (their theories on what they lyrics say are hysterical) but ultimately it was concluded that the song was not bound to defile an entire generation of young minds.
  2. "Lola" — The Kinks: Thought to be about a beautiful woman, actually inspired by an incident in which Kinks' manager Robert Wace spent a drunken night dancing with a transvestite he mistook for a woman.
  3. "Born in the USA" — Bruce Springsteen: Misperceived as a nationalistic anthem, is really a dark portrait of post-Vietnam life.
  4. "One" — U2: Depending on who you ask, this song is about everything from a young man trying to tell his father about his HIV-positive status, to buffalos, but the track is widely believed to have been inspired by Bono's relationship with his own father.
  5. "Rainy Day Women #12 & #35" — Bob Dylan: With its lyrical proclamation, "everybody must get stoned" the song was embraced as a stoner's anthem, but the song is actually about the literal throwing of stones.
  6. "Please Please Me" — The Beatles: Thought to be a cute little teenage love song, is actually about oral sex.
  7. "Alison" — Elvis Costello: Yeah, it's a song about betrayal and misery directed at a member of the opposite sex, but it's not about murder, as many have speculated.
  8. "One I Love" — R.E.M.: Thought to be about the one he loves, is actually meant to be ironic.
  9. "Edge of Seventeen" — Stevie Nicks: Thought to be about teen angst and or drug addiction, is actually about the deaths of John Lennon and Nicks' uncle.
  10. "Pictures of Lily" — The Who: Thought to be a sweet love song, is actually about a young boy's obsession with a porn star.
  11. "Polly" — Nirvana: Misunderstood by frat boys to glorify rape, was actually inspired by a true story in which a rape victim escaped from her captor.
  12. "She Bop" — Cyndi Lauper: Thought to be a charming and innocent song about a girl dancing around, is actually about masturbation.
  13. "Hey Jude" — The Beatles: Some suspect the song is about taking heroin, it was actually written by Paul McCartney for John's son Julian.
  14. "Pretzel Logic" — Steely Dan: Mistakenly thought to be about Adolf Hitler.
  15. "Crystal Blue Persuasion" — Tommy James & The Shondells: The song was misunderstood to be about making crystal meth, when the actual inspiration was a description of Heaven in "The Book of Revelation".
  16. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" — The Beatles: Though this song is widely assumed to be about LSD, the official statement is that the song was inspired by Julian Lennon's drawing ... which John Lennon was looking at while high on LSD. Just kidding. The song has nothing to do with drugs (officially). Seriously. Drawings. Not drugs. Got it?
  17. "Harder to Breathe" — Maroon 5: Originally this song was thought to be about a troubled romance and or stalker-like-tendencies of a particularly pissed off lover, but Levine says it was inspired by record company pressure to write more singles.
  18. "Pennyroyal Tea" — Nirvana: Thought to be inspired by many things, including a tea Kurt drank to ease his stomach pain, was actually inspired by an herbal remedy meant to cause an abortion.
  19. "In the Air Tonight" — Phil Collins: Widely thought to be about a drowning incident, is actually about divorce.
  20. "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" — Green Day: Misperceived as a love song, is really about a bitterness-filled breakup.
  21. "Take Me Out" — Franz Ferdinand: Fans have speculated that the song is about a troubled couple who just can't get their adolescent hearts together, it's actually inspired by the assassination of Austria-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
  22. "Some Candy Talking" — Jesus and Mary Chain: Though every other Jesus and Mary Chain song ever written seems to have a trippy theme and or feel, the band insists this song is not, as many believe, about heroin. Not. About. Drugs. Officially.
  23. "Girl" — Beck: Thought to be a love song, is actually about nefarious seduction that ends in murder.
  24. "Drain You" — Nirvana: Thought to be just another song about heroin, is actually about a case in which one twin baby stole the nutrients from its twin while in the womb, resulting in one stillbirth.
  25. "Dier Eir von Satan" — Tool: Thought to be about something to do with Satan, the lyrics, which are all in German, actually consist entirely of a repeating recipe for hashish cookies
